“There's no saving people when it's their time to die,” I muttered to myself as I walked to get my new reaping.
Prudence looked away from Laura's face and turned to me with bewildered eyes. “Not true. I saved people before.”
I stopped in my tracks and participated in a staring contest with Prudence. I tilted my head to the left and then to the right, her eyes following my every movement.
“Who are you?” she asked.
Reminding myself to return to the parking lot later, I willed myself out of her sight. “I'm someone you're not supposed to see.”
Prudence also appears in the novel I Killed My Friends and It Thrilled Me.
