The Hand That Stopped the Descent
“What about the man we were supposed to save? We need to go back there.” Prudence brushed off the leaves and twigs on her jacket. The bright Hand of Justice, that stopped our descent downhill, turned her into a silhouette.
“There's no man to save. It was a decoy,” I told her.
“If they're not vampires, what are they?”
I walked around Prudence and stopped on a spot where the Hand illuminated her face. “They're Deaths.”
“Deaths? Like you?” Her mouth remained open after the last word.
“I can't visit every dying person on the planet by myself, you know.”
Prudence also appears in the novel I Killed My Friends and It Thrilled Me.
