Pleasure, Vice, and Heresy
People taking their final breaths, I'd seen them. Beloveds sacrificing their lives, I witnessed many such instances. Men dying for the absurdest reasons, they'd become common occurrences in my existence. I understood all there was to know about death, the final passage of life, inevitable, holy, and, for some, scary.
Though I didn't understand it the way she did, the way Prudence, obsessed with saving people she only knew as strangers, knew it. She could've lived a life away from it, a life filled with pleasure, vice, and even heresy, like most mortals. But she didn't. She made a choice.
Prudence also appears in the novel I Killed My Friends and It Thrilled Me.
