Conflicted whether to shoot a video for YouTube or take photos for Instagram of your kids' birthday party? Vhoto can help you with that!
Record a video or import one from your library. Vhoto will pick the best photos from the video for you. How convenient, right?
Vhoto also allows you to edit pictures. You can rotate the orientation, adjust the brightness or exposure, or apply pre-made filters to the photos. Share them in Vhoto's own social networking and use hashtags to submit to hot collections. If you choose to skip that, you can share your photo to other social networking sites instead such as Twitter or Instagram.
Let's go through a walkthrough.
The teaser “Vhoto finds the great photos hidden inside your videos. Choose your favorites!” appears when you first launch the app.
The app takes you to the recording screen right away. I choose to import an existing video of my friends arriving on the night we watched The Amazing Spiderman 2.
Vhoto analyzes the entire video, selecting the best frames to turn into photos.
It processes the results, which at this point, I think it selects the cream(s) of the crop.
After completion, the photos are shown to you. In the video, my friends were from two levels below me and went up via two escalators. No photo was chosen from that part. The resulting photos were from the part they were walking towards me already.
I choose one of the photos, and the editing icons appear at the bottom: filters, adjustments, rotate, and save.
I tap the filter icon and a few pre-made filters are presented. The filters are quite simple such as black and white, enhancement effects, and vintage. Despite the criticism of Instagram's filters, I'd choose them over what Vhoto has to offer right now.
The second icon brings out adjustment tools for contrast, exposure, sharpen, and saturation.
The third icon allows you to rotate or flip the photo while the fourth saves the edited image in your photo library.
Once done with the editing, tap the Share button at the upper-right. Add a description or hashtag to your “Vhoto”. Post and share it to other Vhoto users, or broadcast to other social network via the icons below.
But it doesn't end there, folks! You'll notice an icon of three heads at the upper-left. Tap that and your Profile panel will display.
The gear icon at the top will show your Settings. Customize your display image, banner, and connected social networks. There are two interesting features that I have turned off here: the unlimited storage and the beta program, which I haven't tried yet.
You can browse other Vhotos from users via your feed or by selecting hashtags as well, just like our favorite Instagram.
Pros: Vhoto is easy to use and does its tasks very well. It adds more beyond just simply extracting photos from videos.
Cons: The filters need improvement.
Summary: Vhoto solves the dilemma of choosing between taking a video or a photo. Videos, photos, image editing, sharing, social network - Vhoto has it all covered. Right now, the app needs to widen its audience because it rightfully deserves it.
